MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company, through its subsidiaries, engages in the generation, transmission, storage, distribution, and supply of energy in the United States, Great Britain, and the Philippines.
The company generates energy from coal, natural gas/steam, hydroelectric, wind, geothermal, nuclear, and black liquor resources.
It owns and operates an electric utility company in the western United States; an electric and natural gas utility company in the midwestern United States; two interstate natural gas pipeline companies in the United States; two electricity distribution companies in Great Britain; and a diversified portfolio of independent power projects and the residential real estate brokerage firm in the United States.
The company also sells electricity to other utilities, municipalities, and energy marketing companies on a wholesale basis; and transports and stores natural gas for utilities, municipalities, other pipeline companies, gas marketing companies, industrial and commercial users, and other end-users.
In addition, it offers traditional residential real estate brokerage services, as well as other real estate services, including mortgage originations, title and closing services, property and casualty insurance, home warranties, and other home-related services.
As of December 31, 2010, MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company served approximately 6.2 million electricity customers and end users, as well as approximately 0.7 million natural gas customers; operated approximately 17,000 miles of pipeline; and had interests in approximately 18,000 net owned megawatts of power generation facilities in operation, as well as 1,000 megawatts of generation in independent power projects.
The company was formerly known as CalEnergy Company, Inc. and changed its name to MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company in 1999.
The company was founded in 1971 and is based in Des Moines, Iowa.
